For a number of years our son Zachary’s nickname for me has been, “Old Geezebag.” This was said in the most loving way possible. You know what they say, “If the shoe fits…”
I will be seventy-two in August and have prostate cancer and Parkinson’s Disease. We’ve come south to Florida to escape the cold and snow. While we’re here we eat dinner early and sing Karaoke at a bar that closes at 9:30. Yes, the bar actually SHUTS DOWN at 9:30!! I guess the shoe definitely fits.
Someone said that Karaoke comes from a Japanese word that could be translated, “bad singing” or “amateur night”. Both things are true at Bonita Bill’s. There are a few good amateur singers and a lot of truly bad singers. However, everyone is there to drink beer and have fun, so it really doesn’t matter how good they sing their song.
One professional singer I have come to appreciate, both for her abilities and her humanity, is Cindi Lauper. She became popular in the mid-eighties and our daughter Michelle loved her. At the time I didn’t think much about her. Lately I have been listening to her music and reading about her life. Wow. What a beautiful human being.
I was thinking about her song, Girls Just Want to Have Fun. How would that sound if Cindi wrote and sang it today at her current age?
So, with apologies to Cindi Lauper, here’s my idea of what it might sound like.
Geezers Just Want to Have Fun
I’m still awake, in the mornin’ light
My daughter says, “When you gonna sleep through the night?”
Oh daughter dear, we’re not the fortunate ones
And geezers, they wanna have fun
Oh geezers just wanna have fun…
The phone rings, in the middle of the night
My son yells, “When you gonna turn out your light?”
Oh baby dear, you know you’re still number one
But geezers they wanna have fun
Oh geezers just wanna have
That’s all they really want
Some fun
When their working days are done
Oh geezers, they wanna have fun
Oh geezers just wanna have fun
(Geezers, they wanna, wanna have fun, Geezers, wanna have)
Some kids take a geezer girl
And hide ‘er away in the nursing home world
I wanna be the one to walk in the sun
Oh geezers, they wanna have fun
Oh, geezers just wanna have
That’s all they really want
some fun
When their workin’ days are done Oh geezers, they wanna have fun Oh geezers just wanna have fun (Geezers, they want, wanna have, geezers, wanna have)
They Just wanna, they just wanna, (geezers) They just wanna, they Just wanna, (Geezers, they want)
Oh Geezers Geezers just wanna have (They want, they just wanna) They Just wanna, they just wanna, (geezers) They just wanna, they Just wanna, (Geezers, they want) Geezers, Geeezers just wanna have fun When their working days, When their working days are done
Oh, when retirement days have begun. Oh geezers, Geezers want wanna have fun…
Oh Geezers Geezers just wanna have (They want, they just wanna) They Just wanna, they just wanna, (geezers) They just wanna, they Just wanna, (Geezers, they want) Geezers, Geeezers just wanna have fun When their working, When their working days are done
Oh, when retirement days have begun. Oh geezers, YES! Geezers want wanna have fun…
Next time I sing Karioke, I plan on singing, Geezers just wanna have fun. I will let you know how it goes. (In case you wonder, I never made it back to Bonita Bill’s last February. Maybe next winter.)
Now that I’m a part of the Geezer world, I really do want to enjoy life. It is really true, Geezers just wanna have fun.
